Always Learning

These days it seems that I'm constantly trying to learn something new.  I relaunched my pottery business in October and I've had to learn a lot on the fly.

I'm learning about how to better use my website, how to market more effectively with Pinterest, how to use a different glazing technique, how to modify my potter's wheel, how to grow an email list... and the list goes on right?

Lately, one of the things I'm learning a ton about is Photography.  Obviously to present my pottery well I have to have great photos.  I do own a nice DSLR camera, but I usually just do photography with my iPhone. Here are a few things I've learned:

- Good photographs are intentional and not an accident.  It takes time and planning to create good photos.

- Download a good photo editing app.  I've tried a couple of different ones, but I am using one called Snapseed right now and I like it.

- Use natural light.  This is hard for me in my basement studio, so I have to photograph my work somewhere else.

- Use food, tools, greenery, etc. to tell the story of the piece.  Demonstrating the functionality of a piece as well as bringing in more color really helps the photos look great.

- Designate an area in your home for photos.  I have an area that does get a lot of natural light where I take photos.  I use a flat white canvas to take the white background photos.

I'm confident that as you follow along with my journey you will see more progress in my photography!

Learning never stops, right?  I have to remind myself to embrace it.  What are you learning?

- Michelle
